Frankincense (Boswellia sacra). Naturally grows in Oman, Yemen, Somalia, and is cultivated in the dry southern regions of northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula – it is used to produce frankincense.

Boswellia produces frankincense resin, which has been used since ancient times for aromatic incense during religious ceremonies. Frankincense is an excellent antiseptic and is used for disinfecting spaces.

The medicinal properties of Boswellia are widely used in medicine.

Viscous sap-resins are obtained from Boswellia. The purified extract of these resins is used for medicinal purposes. In Ayurveda, the group of resin-producing plants is collectively called guggal. Traditionally, they are used against arthritis and joint pain, lung problems, diarrhea, dysentery, as well as antiparasitic and mucus-reducing agents.

History of use in traditional and official medicine:

In Ayurveda, Boswellia is used as an anti-inflammatory agent and for treating joint pain and arthritis. In India, it is called the "fighter against inflammation." The plant is mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts and is one of the most important components of both traditional and official medicine.

The medicinal properties of Boswellia are used in cases such as joint diseases – arthritis, rheumatism, osteochondrosis, gout, back pain with increased strain on the musculoskeletal system, maintaining joint mobility and muscle flexibility, reducing pain and swelling in joints, and providing nutritional support for the musculoskeletal system.

The main active components of these resins are pentacyclic triterpenic acids: β-boswellic acid, acetyl-β-boswellic acid, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid. Studies of resin extracts and individual boswellic acids have shown pronounced anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic effects, as well as analgesic and antibacterial activity.

Pharmacological properties:

The mechanism of Boswellia’s action is based on blocking leukotriene synthesis and is similar to the action of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), with the only difference being that Boswellia does not cause the typical side effects of NSAIDs (mucosal ulcers, hives, bronchial spasms, etc.).

Anti-inflammatory action: boswellic acid effectively blocks leukotriene synthesis (similar to NSAIDs) – hormone-like substances that are one of the main factors of inflammation; it prevents leukocytes and macrophages from entering cartilage and joint fluid, reducing the degree of cartilage damage. Thanks to its pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, Boswellia can replace or significantly reduce the dose of synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) usually prescribed for arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Boswellia slows cartilage destruction: boswellic acid prevents the release of lysosomal enzymes, reduces the release of structural components of cartilage tissue such as hydroxyproline, hexosamines, and uronic acid, thereby slowing cartilage destruction processes and activating regenerative processes.

Boswellia’s analgesic effect: the active components effectively reduce pain and morning joint stiffness, and decrease joint swelling.

Vascular strengthening effect: Boswellia components improve microcirculation in joint tissues, thereby facilitating blood access to damaged areas. This also provides nutritional and medicinal substance delivery to the musculoskeletal system.

Boswellia resins have properties that inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and have wound-healing effects.

Boswellia has a mild sedative effect. It normalizes lipid metabolism: resin components reduce levels of low and very low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides in the blood, preventing the development of atherosclerosis and protecting the liver from fatty degeneration. It has a moderate diuretic effect and a mild choleretic effect. It exhibits pronounced hypoglycemic properties. In experiments, it shows anticancer activity against epidermal carcinoma.

Toxicology and side effects:

Boswellia is a safe medicine, even with long-term use, it does not cause side effects, unlike steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. According to many studies conducted in India, the USA, and other countries, Boswellia is more effective and less toxic than standard pharmaceutical drugs for treating joint diseases.

Usage:

Boswellia is used orally: it is available as an extract.

Doses: 10-15 drops 3 times a day orally. The treatment duration is about 4-6 weeks, followed by a 2-week break. You can add the tincture to your tea or other drinks, or place it in capsules designed for this purpose.

A 100 ml bottle is sufficient for 2-3 months of use.

Boswellia is also used externally: therapeutic ointments and creams are made based on it.

Boswellia is used in cosmetology because it has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties.
